Contractor’s Corner: Decking and Hardscapes, a Beautiful CombinationPosted: June 18, 2012
Contractors play a pivotal role in helping homeowners bring their outdoor living visions to life. Each month, we’ll offer a Contractor’s Corner post to share tips to help our contractor partners offer even more to homeowners and their landscapes.
Combining multiple design elements and mediums has become a rising trend in residential outdoor living design. One example of this is the combination of decking and hardscapes. Whether working with composite or organic wood, the aesthetic combination of wood and stone together creates a warm and inviting look that continues to grow in popularity.
Belgard Hardscapes is the preferred hardscapes supplier for Archadeck®, the nation’s largest builder network specializing in custom-designed and custom-built decks, screened porches, sunrooms, gazebos and related outdoor living structures. We asked them what they’re seeing in outdoor living projects:
“We’ve seen a trend of homeowners seeking the natural style of wood decks paired with paver patios,” says Rob Haislip, vice president of franchise services for Archadeck. “Belgard’s wide variety of colors, shapes and textures pair beautifully with the look of synthetic or composite decking. Much of our business is moving towards combination projects – projects that include both decking and patios.”
“In elevated areas, building a deck above and a patio below increases livable square footage outdoors,” he said. “When considering these types of projects, homeowners should work with a design professional to ensure a logical order for installation; including features such as an outdoor kitchen or fireplace or fire pit need to be well-thought-out during the planning phase.”
Introducing wood into a hardscape design can soften the look, increase design flexibility, and create opportunities to broaden the scope of a project. Examples can include multi-level landings, arbors, trellises, bridges, and built-in seating.
Homeowners want outdoor living spaces that reflect their personality and specific needs. By offering decking and hardscapes together, your clients won’t have to choose.
