Contractor’s Corner: New Products for 2013

Contractors play a pivotal role in helping homeowners bring their outdoor living visions to life. Each month, we’ll offer a Contractor’s Corner post to share tips to help our contractor partners offer even more to homeowners and their landscapes.

A new year brings new beginnings, new inspirations and new Belgard products, of course! We are excited to introduce new product offerings including Lafitt™ Grana Slab, Wellington Wall™ and Mega-Tandem™ Wall.

Lafitt™ Grana Slab
1.21.13 - 1
Lafitt Grana Slab pairs sleek, contemporary style with modern durability and design innovation. This three piece modular slab features large scale units and a smooth finish, providing increased area coverage with fewer pieces and giving every outdoor space a grand appearance.

Lafitt Grana Slab, which was used in the 2012 House Beautiful Kitchen of the Year, is regionally available with plans to expand nationwide soon.

Wellington Wall™
1.21.13 - 2
Wellington Wall system provides the rough-hewn appearance of hand-laid stone that will complement any hardscapes project. The versatile, multi-piece Wellington Wall system can be used to create attractive, curved or straight retaining and freestanding landscape walls and is great for use in a wide range of residential projects.

Wellington Wall can be used for either retaining or freestanding wall applications and requires no pattern for a random look. Wellington Wall is currently available in the Midwest.

Mega-Tandem™ Wall
1.21.13 - 3
Belgard is launching the newest innovation in segmental retaining wall design with Mega-Tandem Wall. Mega-Tandem can be used for residential or commercial applications. Walls may be built up to 10-feet high without reinforcement and 25-feet high with reinforcement.

The face of Mega-Tandem has a texture reminiscent of natural stone. The front veneer panels are attached by connecting members to a back panel and the wall system is filled with net aggregates for structural integrity. Design versatility allows for radiuses and right angle corners with 2.5 degree setback. Mega-Tandem will be released in late spring of 2013.

Contractor’s Corner: Caring for Hardscapes in Cold Climates

Contractors play a pivotal role in helping homeowners bring their outdoor living visions to life. Each month, we’ll offer a Contractor’s Corner post to share tips to help our contractor partners offer even more to homeowners and their landscapes.

12.17

One aspect of being a trustworthy source of information for your customers is keeping up-to-date with industry education. This month, we’re diving into a subject that can help homeowners in even some of the milder climates – how winter’s weather and deicing salts can affect pavers.

With the goal of helping our contractors speak to homeowners about maintaining pavers during freeze season, Belgard published a whitepaper on the effects of deicing salt, Caring for Hardscapes in Cold Climates.

While deicing salts can effectively eliminate slippery conditions, they also may adversely affect interlocking concrete pavers, often used in the landscape, walkways and driveways, by causing visual and structural damage. However, properly manufactured and maintained pavers can resist the degradation caused by the salts. The whitepaper educates readers on why damage occurs and how it can be managed.

“I’ve seen salt damage pavers in as little as three years,” said Lou Mangiaracina, vice president of sales in the Northeast for Belgard Hardscapes, which makes pavers for patios, walkways and driveways. “After a while, salt buildup can disintegrate pavers if they are not properly manufactured and maintained. Care is critical during the wintery seasons to ensure your driveways, walkways and patios maintain their beauty for years to come.”

According to the whitepaper, resistance to salts is related directly to a low absorption rate and a high compressive strength, and pavers generally outperform solid concrete and asphalt in both areas. While no paver is truly deicing salt proof, most are deicing salt resistant.

Properly manufactured pavers, such as Belgard’s innovative range of paver and wall products, can resist the effects of deicing salt because Belgard uses aggregate materials that are high strength with low absorption rates with no deleterious material that may contaminate the finished product. Belgard pavers exceed the American Society for Testing Materials’ (ASTM) industry standard for solid concrete interlocking pavers.

Routine maintenance, as with any exterior surface, can also help minimize the effects of deicing salts. The Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI) Technical Committee recommends these guidelines to limit the exposure to deicing:

•    Mix the salt with sand, which is visible and the traction can be felt underfoot
•    Follow the recommended application and don’t over-apply the salt
•    Use deicing salt for melting ice, not for snow removal
•    Remove the ice once it’s loose to avoid salt buildup
•    Wash off the pavers in the spring, since the salt can continue to cause degradation even after the ice or snow has melted

Contractor’s Corner: Project Spotlight – Blue Max

Contractors play a pivotal role in helping homeowners bring their outdoor living visions to life. Each month, we’ll offer a Contractor’s Corner post to share tips to help our contractor partners offer even more to homeowners and their landscapes.

Last month, Blue Max Materials in Charlotte, N.C. celebrated the opening of its new Outdoor Living Design Center. The design space is an inspiration hub and one-stop-shop for contractors and homeowners alike.

The space was created to give Blue Max customers one place where they could see a variety of work in a natural, inviting setting.

Design centers like the one at Blue Max are a great way for contractors to help their clients envision what their outdoor space can become.

Contractors love the new design center because they can bring their clients with them to help pinpoint what the homeowner is looking for and then source the materials at the same place. Blue Max owner Mike Bishop says they see two or three contractors a day bringing in clients.

“We’ve been receiving a lot of positive feedback on the Outdoor Living Design Center,” Bishop said. “From contractors to homeowners, and the installers who worked on the space, we’ve been able to provide a source of inspiration, a source for materials, and a referral source for the great companies who created the vignettes.”

Currently featuring six backyard vignettes, the almost two-acre space will be host to eleven vignettes when the second phase of construction is complete next spring.

“Our goal was to create a welcoming environment where our customers could leisurely walk the displays,” said Barb Luzum, marketing director at Blue Max. “The center was designed to feel like someone’s backyard. When homeowners walk through the space we want them to daydream about the possibilities for their own backyard.”

Each vignette was constructed by a local installer to showcase a wide variety of options in outdoor living spaces. Local installers include Belgard Authorized Contractor (BAC) Greenview Landscape, BAC Island Creek Landscape, BAC TG&R Landscape Group, BAC Overstream Landscaping, Peaceful Ponds, and The Stone Man.

“This design center would not have been possible without everyone involved, including the installers and manufacturers, like Belgard,” Bishop said. “We’re so excited to see this project come to fruition and continue to grow into next year.”

Contractor’s Corner: Marketing Made Easy, Belgard’s Co-Op Program

Contractors play a pivotal role in helping homeowners bring their outdoor living visions to life. Each month, we’ll offer a Contractor’s Corner post to share tips to help our contractor partners offer even more to homeowners and their landscapes.

Last month, we talked about optimizing your off season by following up with former clients. This month, we’re taking a look at how Belgard can help you get in front of new potential clients and spend your marketing dollars wisely.

Belgard’s marketing reach extends across multiple media channels – print, events, public relations, online social media, video and websites – to increase consumer brand awareness and promote our two most valuable assets: our products and the people who sell and install them.

With our Co-Op Marketing Program you can take advantage of our customer research, media intelligence and advertising planning, as well as cost-effective tiered-level and custom-designed marketing plans. We will help you identify where your target audience lives, select media specific to your audience, and schedule your media dollars in coordination with the Belgard national advertising calendar.

“We loved the streamlined advertising approach,” said Jeff Ebb of Weyers Equipment in Kaukauna, Wis. “It gave us various TV and print options that we didn’t previously have available to us.”

Paul Engel of Gulfstream Hardscape in Vero Beach, Fla., says his new website is a great sales tool.

“Belgard helped me create a website that has become my virtual showroom,” Engel said.

Contractor’s Corner: Optimizing The Off Season

Contractors play a pivotal role in helping homeowners bring their outdoor living visions to life. Each month, we’ll offer a Contractor’s Corner post to share tips to help our contractor partners offer even more to homeowners and their landscapes.

As cooler weather moves in, homeowners will begin to think less about outdoor entertaining and more about bundling up indoors. The off season presents a challenge to landscape contractors because jobs are few and far between. This month, we’ll explore one way to optimize the off season and use your free time to build your business and convert sales.

Fall and winter present the perfect opportunity to focus on building your business. Following up with your past customers is one of the best ways to conjure repeat business.

Let’s say your team installed a walkway for a homeowner a few months ago. The homeowner was happy with the result and the quality of your work. Since you already have an established relationship, contact the homeowner to see if they are ready to update their driveway or extend their living space with a patio. They have worked with you in the past and, if they are a satisfied customer, you will be at the top of their list when they have other projects. With your breadth of experience, you can educate them on solutions and inspire them with possibilities.

There are lots of additions you can suggest to your clients. Consider your previous work with the homeowner and what would be a good addition to their space. If they’ve recently had a new patio installed, they might be ready to introduce a fire feature; fireplaces and fire pits are much easier for a homeowner to imagine as the weather starts to change. Did your team recently install a paver driveway for a family that also has a pool in the backyard? Perhaps a new pool deck in complementing pavers will help transition the front of the home to the backyard and create the outdoor oasis of their dreams. Work during the off-season will have it ready for them to enjoy when the weather warms again.

Follow up is an easy way to build your business during the quieter months. Even if your customers aren’t quite ready for their next project, you’ll be the first to come to mind when their friends and family are looking for recommendations.
