Color
You probably brighten up a kitchen or bedroom with vibrant paint colors and accessories that pop – your outdoor space is no different. Don’t be afraid to “paint” with pavers and choose colors that make an impact. The best advice is to select hues that work in harmony with your home environment: pavers a few shades lighter than the color of your house won’t compete for attention; gray-toned pavers used with brick houses eliminate the urge to match everything; and, brick-colored pavers add warmth to wood or stone houses.

Here are a few things to consider when selecting your paver colors:

• Choose pavers with similar tones for a coordinated effect. Light colors reflect the light and open up an area, whereas darker tones absorb light and make areas appear smaller.
• A multicolor blend is a paver with more than one color. It can be a blend of two, three, or more colors. Multicolored pavers blend better with their surroundings. Most minor stains are thoroughly camouflaged in the multitude of hues and tones.
• When designing an area, it’s wise to consider where the sun hits, how long it stays sunny in that location, and how much shade is being cast there. Do you want to make that area look larger or smaller?

Texture

Texture is just as much fun to play with as color when selecting pavers. With such a wide variety of textures, you shouldn’t feel the need to settle on just one to create a stunning outdoor space. Adding multiple textures to your design can add even more interest. Textures can be suited to meet your practical needs as well. Smoother, more rounded surfaces are ideal in high-traffic areas or swimming pool decks.

Here are the three basic types of textures:

• Natural texture is characterized by uneven contouring in varying degrees to create a more organic look.
• Classic texture is characterized by a smooth surface with angles or rounded chamfer.
• Antique texture has a surface that recalls the rugged, time-honored feel of old European brick.

Ingredients

1 center-cut beef tenderloin (3 to 4 lbs.)
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
12 large fresh basil leaves
12 fresh sage leaves
1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
6 to 9 garlic cloves, minced
About 2 tsp. sea salt, divided
About 1/2 tsp. pepper, divided
2 tablespoons olive oil
Sage, basil, or thyme sprigs

Preparation

1. Bring meat to room temperature, about 1 hour. Cut through meat horizontally (parallel to work surface) to within 1/2 in. of other side. Lay meat open like a book and spread with mustard, then top with basil and sage leaves. Sprinkle with thyme leaves, garlic, 1 tsp. salt, and 1/4 tsp. pepper.

2. Close up roast and tie with cotton string at 1-in. intervals. Rub all over with oil and sprinkle with 1 tsp. salt and 1/4 tsp. pepper.

3. Prepare a charcoal or gas grill for indirect medium heat, using a drip pan filled halfway with warm water. Grill beef over indirect-heat area, covered, until an instant-read thermometer inserted into thickest part registers 130° to 135° for rare, 60 to 70 minutes. Transfer beef to a platter and let rest 20 minutes.

4. Remove string. Top beef with herb sprigs. Slice and add salt and pepper to taste.

How to set up your grill for indirect heat

*On a charcoal grill: Ignite about 60 briquettes on the fire grate of your barbecue. Let burn until coals are dotted with ash, about 25 minutes, then push coals to one side and lay a drip pan on the other side. Set grill in place.

*On a gas grill: Turn heat to high and close lid for at least 10 minutes. Adjust heat to medium and turn off burners as needed to create a hot and a cool zone for indirect cooking. Set drip pan in cool zone; set grill in place.

“Belgard Catalina pavers, in addition to being a beautiful product, offer the eco-advantages of permeability, reducing run-off and pollution,” said Kathi McCalligan, Home Programs Director, Sunset Magazine.

The permeable paver system filters rainwater through the joints and an underlying bed of gradient gravel and drains into a collection area, keeping the walkway, parking area below, and surrounding streets free from excessive runoff and performing a vital storm water management function for the entire mixed-use development where the townhomes are located.

“Storm water management is one reason Belgard permeable pavers contribute towards a number of LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) credits,” says Gene Weddle, LEED Green Associate, Belgard Hardscapes. “Many municipal projects mandate LEED point objectives, and more and more private sector projects pursue LEED credits as evidence of environmental stewardship. Depending on project needs, the filtered water can also be harvested for gray-water applications.”

Weddle ads that in addition to storm water management, the specific color of paver selected—Catalina Montecito Blend—offers the additional benefit of reducing the “heat island” effect. “In urban areas, replacing ground cover with buildings and pavement often results in higher overall temperatures, which in turn places higher demands on energy. Catalina Montecito offers more reflectivity than darker pavements, leading to cooler surrounding temperatures, and allowing lower wattage for area lighting, reducing both energy use and long-term cost.”

The Catalina pavers also offer ADA compliance for the pedestrian walkway because of the smooth paver-to-paver transitions.

As the weather starts to get cooler, what better way to stay warm than heating up the kitchen with a new dessert recipe filled with apples? It’s apple season, and with the Thanksgiving holiday coming up, this Grilled-Baked Apple Crisp recipe will have everyone at the dinner table talking! Not only can this dessert be cooked in the oven (including your outdoor brick oven), but you can also cook it on the grill. It may be a bit chilly, but cooking outside at a family gathering, especially if you have a fire feature to keep you warm, is the perfect way to kickoff the season.

This recipe makes 8 to 10 servings.

 Grill-Baked Apple Crisp

 Ingredients:

*1/2 cup (4 oz.) butter
*10 apples (about 5 lb. total), preferably a mixture of Granny Smith and Golden Delicious
*2 cups all-purpose flour
*1 cup sugar
* 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
*2 teaspoons baking powder
*3/4 teaspoon salt
*2 large eggs
*Vanilla ice cream (optional)

Preparation:

1. Melt butter over low heat; set aside.

2. Peel, core, and cut apples into 1/3-inch-thick slices. Place apples in a 9- by 13-inch baking pan (see Notes at end of blog); spread level.

3. In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, cinnamon, baking powder, and salt. Drop in eggs and mix with a pastry blender or fork until crumbly (the mixture will resemble streusel). Spread topping evenly over apples. Drizzle with melted butter.

4. Prepare your grill for indirect heat. The temperature inside your grill should be between 350° and 400° (insert a long-stemmed thermometer through lid vent to measure temperature). Place the apple crisp on the grill (not directly over the coals or burners). Cover barbecue.

5. Cook until the topping is browned and the apples are bubbling, 40 to 45 minutes. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, if desired.

How to set up your grill for indirect heat.

*On a charcoal barbecue: Ignite about 60 briquets on the firegrate of your barbecue. Let burn until coals are dotted with ash, about 25 minutes, then push coals to one side and lay a drip pan on the other side. Set grill in place.

*On a gas barbecue: Turn heat to high and close lid for at least 10 minutes. Adjust heat to medium and turn off burners as needed to create a hot and a cool zone for indirect cooking. Set drip pan in cool zone; set grill in place.

*Smokin’ Apple Crisp: If you really love the flavor of smoke, you can actually smoke this apple crisp: Cover 1/3 cup applewood chips with water and soak for about 30 minutes, then drain. Just before you place the apple crisp on the grate, scatter the chips over the coals (if using a charcoal grill), or place the chips in the metal smoking box of you have a gas grill (or in a foil pan directly on the heat in a corner).

Notes: Use a disposable aluminum pan or a foil-wrapped metal 9- by 13-inch baking pan to bake this crisp on the grill. The recipe makes a generous amount of dessert, but we like having leftovers for breakfast. Wrap in plastic and keep overnight at room temperature.

Belgard Display - pavers, permeable paver fountain, walls and brick veneer

This year, the city of Louisville, KY played host to the best and brightest in the Outdoor Landscaping arena. As a major exhibitor at the HNA (Hardscapes of North America) expo at the end of October, Belgard^® stole the show with their displays and events. Using their most popular products, the versatility of Belgard’s pavers and walls made for a spectacular display area where visitors couldn’t help but linger and feel as if they were in a towne square. The area even included Oldcastle’s Glen Gery brick veneer product to create the appearance of real “buildings.”

Using pavers from the Mega Lafitt^®, Lafitt and Domino pavers line, plus the new product, Anglia Edger^tm, walkways meandered in the Belgard booth. With Belgard’s wall pavers, fountains created a relaxing ambiance and landscape met with colored lights, all within the expo center. Speakers were integrated throughout so that visitors were attracted from across the facility. Visitors could touch and sample the Elements Outdoor Living products which Belgard offers to create your ideal outdoor room.

The "Block"

Over the three days, many thousands of industry professionals visited the Belgard booth. Thursday the Belgard “Block Party” was the hit. It featured a day of food, live music and festivity. The event was such a showstopper, even the country group Stealing Angels stopped by.

Friday was an even more exciting day as the Belgard Street Carnival attracted visitors and more than 500 people competed for the chance to be Carnival Champion. See videos (below) with Vice President of Belgard Marketing, Ken O’Neill on 2012 trends and carving a space.

On Saturday, the “Block Party Tailgate Extravaganza” enticed visitor to experience Belgard living as they could relax in Belgard’s outdoor living space and view ESPN’s College Game Day on the big screen and compete in bean bag toss competitive games.

Outside, Belgard’s presence was evidenced by the wafting smells of pizza cooked non-stop (over 200!) in our Chicago Brick ovens. Belgard’s Elements Collection of fireplaces, columns and firepits were on display. This area had demonstrations and discussion on some of our latest product innovations from our R&D facility.
